Shoyu Turkey Hot Dog

This Shoyu Turkey Hot Dog recipe will bring you back to your Hawaii childhood. If you were born and raised in Hawaii, you have had Shoyu Hot Dog (#iykyk). That salty, umami flavor that you can only get with a shoyu/sugar combination glazed over easy to cook hot dogs is the perfect topping for steamed white rice. Many of us probably ate hot dogs with rice before we ate hot dogs in a bun!

Why this recipe is so great

shoyu turkey hot dog in a pan

It’s an easy, fast way to get dinner on the table and food in your kids’ mouths. Another great thing about this meal is that it’s budget friendly. When the turkey hot dogs go on sale, I’ll pick up a couple of packages and stick them in the freezer if I am not using them right away.

Convenience is another benefit. Instead of hunting down hot dog buns at the store at the last minute or trying to plan this ahead of time, it’s served with steamed rice which most Hawaii families have in their pantry and can easily cook in a rice cooker.

Turkey Hot Dog Health Benefits

With all the health concerns about processed foods and red meat, some people might dismiss hot dogs for dinner. However, using turkey hot dogs without nitrates or nitrites can alleviate the worries about cholesterol risks.

When you make Shoyu Turkey Hot Dog, you won’t even notice the difference in flavor between this and beef or pork hot dogs. In fact, you will probably be able to taste the slightly sweet and savory soy sauce flavor even more.

Tips and Tricks
Can I use other types of hot dogs?
Yes, any hot dog can be used in this recipe. The original recipe usually uses the cheapest hot dog you can find in the grocery store.
Can I swap ingredients?
For low sodium soy sauce, use 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce and 1 tablespoon water.
You can also use brown sugar or coconut sugar for palm sugar. To use honey, use 1 to 1 ½ teaspoon since it is sweeter than palm sugar per ounce.
