Blueberry Pie Cream of Wheat

This Blueberry Pie Cream of Wheat tastes like a blueberry cream pie without tons of sugar. It’s creamy from the milk, has the taste of a crust from the graham cracker and nuts, and is full of sweet blueberry flavor. This breakfast is on the regular rotation during the cold winter months in my house.

Cream of Wheat is just the brand name for the breakfast cereal known as farina. You can use any brand of farina, though I’ve only seen Cream of Wheat in my grocery stores that I can remember.

Why we love this Cream of Wheat recipe

ingredients for blueberry pie cream of wheat

First, farina cooks quicker than oatmeal. Any few minutes to spare in the morning when the sun isn’t even up yet is helpful.

Using frozen blueberries here means I don’t need to wash and cut fresh fruit for breakfast. I can just measure and add the blueberries right to the pot. I don’t need to plan and defrost the blueberries in advance.

The rest of the ingredients are always in my pantry and fridge. So, this is a great impromptu hot breakfast to serve when there’s an unexpected cold front in the islands.

The best part is that the box of farina lasts a long time and takes up way less space than a bag of oatmeal for about the same price. You can also use farina in recipes like you do polenta or grits.

Can I use any type of milk?

Yes, you can swap out whole milk for 2%, 1%, or skim milk. You will want to increase the ratio of milk to water because there is less fat in reduced fat or skim milk. Here use 1 ½ cups of milk and ½ cup of water.

Plant-based milk will also work. Just make sure that the creamier the milk, the more water you will use.

Tips and Tricks
Can I use other frozen fruits?
I haven’t tried it with other fruits, but frozen peaches will probably hold up the best when cooked in the cream of wheat.
If you decide to use other fruits like strawberries or raspberries, it will probably taste good. Just note that the fruits will be softer and will fall apart in the cream of wheat. Give it a try if you don’t mind mushier fruit and let me know how it works for you!
Can I use other types of milk?
Yes. You can use any type of milk. Depending on which milk you use you may have to increase your milk and decrease your water so your cream of wheat will be nice and creamy.
